Overbite

Oboe, Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, Bassoon, Trumpet, and Piano

Program Notes:

Overbite was written for Scott Litroff and the Equinox Sextet. The title invokes a certain type of bad dancing done by people in the throes of intoxicated celebration, blissfully unaware of how humorous they may look to others. The piece is comprised of a dense network of quotations and referential materials, primary among these being Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly and Franz Schubert’s Gretchen Am Spinnrade. As this isn’t my first exploration of Gretchen, several quotations from earlier pieces of mine form a large part of this piece. The overall effect (or affect) is that of rhythmic, violent, joyful flailing.
